Restoring a place-name through community vote.

Defulan Elementary School traces its origins to 1916, when it opened under Japanese colonial rule as "Kyuryōsei Indigenous-Children's Education Post" (久良栖蕃童教育所). For decades afterward it was known as Bo'ai Elementary School. In September 2022, following a community vote, the school was renamed "德芙蘭" (Devilan), restoring the original Atayal place-name to a school whose Japanese-era and Mandarin names had, over the twentieth century, obscured its Indigenous identity. The school also operates a branch campus near the Guguan hot springs.

🏔️

The school explains that "Devilan" is Atayal for "a place with good mountains and good water, fit for people to live." The 2022 renaming was explicitly framed by the community as restoring Atayal place-identity to a school whose Japanese-era and Mandarin names had, over time, set aside the original Indigenous toponym. See the Taichung county page for more on the region.
