A school built on a community's needs and a diaspora's generosity.

Chiao-Ai Elementary traces its roots to a single first-grade branch class that opened in 1955 at the Zhongkou Village community center, proposed by village leader Chen Kun so local children would not have to travel far to school in Huatan. Its present name and much of its early support are tied to the catastrophic August 7 flood that devastated Changhua County, after which overseas Chinese communities around the world launched a relief and school-building campaign. "Chiao-Ai" (僑愛, "Overseas Chinese Love") was one of eight schools built under that initiative and named after a Confucian virtue — and local teachers, village leaders, and families personally contributed funds and labor to fill land and improve facilities.
