An old mountain school, reborn in the forest.
Chajiao Elementary traces its roots to a 1922 private school, "大有義塾," and gained independent public status in 1941 during the Japanese colonial era — giving it over 80 years of history. In school year 113 (2024), the school was converted into Taiwan's first public forest experimental elementary school, adopting a distinctive "悠森學" (Forest Learning) curriculum built on four core strands: humanities, ecology, outdoor education, and action-based forest learning. The campus sits in the Dabaqi Creek watershed, a mountainous area historically home to Atayal indigenous and Hakka logging communities, and its forest-based curriculum directly reflects that terrain and history.

With roots tracing back to a 1922 private school and independent status since 1941, Chajiao brings more than eight decades of local educational history into its new forest-school identity.
A mountain frontier of logging and indigenous history.
Embedded in Sanxia's mountainous Dabaqi River valley — historically an Atayal indigenous and Hakka logging frontier — the school's forest-based curriculum directly reflects that terrain and history, turning the landscape itself into a classroom. See the New Taipei county page for more on the region.
