Caohu Junior High began in August 1962 as a branch of Erlin Junior High School, with Huang Tengbiao appointed as preparatory director and classes borrowed from Caohu Elementary School. It became an independent school, Caohu Junior High School, in the winter of 1964, and was renamed Changhua County Caohu Junior High School in September 1968. The school shares its historical roots with neighboring Caohu Elementary, whose site traces back to a private academy founded in 1931.
草湖國中創立於民國51年（1962年）8月，最初是二林初級中學的分部，由黃騰標擔任籌備主任，借用草湖國小教室上課。民國53年（1964年）冬天獨立設校，定名「草湖初級中學」，民國57年（1968年）9月改名為「彰化縣立草湖國民中學」。學校與鄰近的草湖國小共享歷史淵源，兩校的社區教育根源皆可追溯至1931年創立的私塾。
