Born from disaster, and generosity.

Qiaomei Elementary was founded in 1960 with donations from overseas Chinese communities (僑) after the catastrophic August 1959 flood — known as the "8/7 Flood" — devastated central and southern Taiwan, giving the school its name "僑美," which reflects that overseas charitable origin. Today it remains a small school, with roughly 49 students and 11 teachers, embodying a story of community resilience and rebuilding in the wake of one of Taiwan's worst 20th-century natural disasters.

Resilience beside Mazu's temple.

🌊

Born out of overseas-Chinese charity after the 1959 flood, the school embodies community resilience in a town otherwise defined by the Chaotian Temple Mazu pilgrimage tradition. Its founding story stands as a quieter counterpoint to Beigang's famous pilgrimage identity — one rooted in disaster recovery rather than religious tourism. See the Yunlin county page for more on the region.
