From a merchant family's private school to a public one.
Banqiao Elementary opened in 1899 during the Japanese colonial era as 枋橋公學校 (Banqiao Public School), converting a private "national-language institute" that had been run by the wealthy Lin Ben Yuan (林本源) family. It is the oldest school in the district, and the campus marked a schoolwide centennial celebration in 2025 (ROC 114). A stone monument, 枋橋建學碑, commemorates the Lin family's founding donation, and the school today runs wind and Chinese orchestras alongside handball, badminton, table tennis, and track teams.
