From a borrowed home to a valley anchor.
Ankeng Elementary opened in 1899, its very first class of just 34 students meeting in a borrowed private home before the school had any building of its own. More than 125 years later, it remains rooted in the Ankeng (安坑) valley, one of the historic settlement areas of Xindian that predates even the Japanese colonial era. Today the school is locally known for its central-kitchen school lunch program, a modern touch on an institution with deep local roots.
