In 1971, it briefly operated as a girls-only school, paired with the all-boys Dayi Junior High nearby. In 2007, the school relocated from its original campus near Lotus Pond to a new site in "New Zuoying," part of the district's newly developed urban land — a move that reflects Zuoying's broader shift from its historic core toward modern development.
左營國中創立於民國52年（1963年），初名「高雄市立左營第八初級中學」。民國60年（1971年）曾一度改為女子中學，與鄰近的男子中學大義國中相對應。民國96年（2007年），學校自蓮池潭附近的原址遷往「新左營」新開發市區，這次遷校也反映出左營從歷史核心逐步轉型為現代都市發展的縮影。
