Born from a 1937 naval harbor.
Zuoying Elementary School was founded in 1940 as Zuoying Ordinary Elementary School (左營尋常小學校), during the Japanese colonial era, to educate the children of Japanese naval families stationed at Zuoying after the Imperial Japanese Navy built its harbor there in 1937. When Taiwan was returned to the Republic of China in 1945, the school was taken over by the city government and continued to operate as a public elementary school. Today it has been featured in Taiwan Panorama magazine as an "innovative future school," and its campus includes an English village and a dedicated judo room.

The event that shaped an entire district.
Zuoying Elementary's 1940 founding to serve Japanese naval families is a direct, documented consequence of the Imperial Japanese Navy's 1937 construction of Zuoying harbor — the single event most responsible for the district's enduring identity as a naval town. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
