A century of history, and a quiet ending.
Zhuwan Elementary's roots trace back to 1920, when it began as the "Zhugaowan" branch classroom under Japanese rule, and it took its current name, "Zhuwan National Elementary School," in 1968 — over a century of continuous history. Over the decades, it set up its own branches in turn, including Ximen (1951) and Heheng (1962, later independent as Heheng Elementary). But like many of Penghu's smallest outer-village schools, Zhuwan faced a steadily shrinking student population. Its final graduating class, in 2024, numbered just one student. At the end of that academic year, the school closed as an independent institution due to Taiwan's declining birthrate, and was merged into neighboring Chidong Elementary School as a branch campus.

Over the decades, Zhuwan set up its own branch classrooms — including one in 1962 that later grew into the independent, award-winning Heheng Elementary School.
🎓 A Final Class of One
最後一屆畢業生僅1人
Zhuwan's last graduating class in 2024 numbered just a single student — a poignant marker of the depopulation reshaping Penghu's smallest fishing villages.
🤝 A New Chapter as a Branch Campus
併入池東國小分校
Since the end of the 2024 academic year, the Zhuwan campus has continued on as a branch of Chidong Elementary School, keeping a local school presence in the village.
Zhuwan, a century-old fishing village.
Zhuwan Village is a traditional Xiyu fishing community, and its school's century-long history — followed by a recent, quiet closure — is a stark, real example of the demographic decline now facing Penghu's smallest outer-island villages, even as neighboring communities work to keep local schooling alive. See the Penghu county page for more on the region.
