A school with a torii gate in its courtyard.

Zhutian Elementary traces its roots to 1909, when it began as the "Dunwu Branch" of Neipu Public School, becoming independent as Dunwu Public School in 1916, renamed Zhutian Public School in 1921, and taking the name Zhutian National School in 1941. Today the school serves around 150 students and 15 teachers, and its campus is unusual among Taiwanese elementary schools for openly preserving a piece of wartime history: a torii gate inscribed "Friendship Park" and a stone monument reading "Taiwan-Japan Friendship," commemorating the story of "Snow Grandma" (雪婆婆), a Japanese woman whose husband died of malaria at the wartime field hospital that once stood on this very site.

What makes this school worth knowing.

⛩️ A Torii Gate on Campus

The school grounds include a torii gate inscribed "Friendship Park" and a "Taiwan-Japan Friendship" stone monument — rare features for a Taiwanese elementary school.

❄️ The Story of "Snow Grandma"

The campus sits on the site of a WWII-era field hospital where a Japanese soldier died of malaria — a history remembered locally through the tale of his widow, "Snow Grandma" (Yukitani Yuki).

🌾 Born from the Dunwu Trading Town

Founded in 1909 as a branch of Neipu Public School, Zhutian Elementary grew alongside the old rice-trading settlement of "Dunwu," whose 1919 wooden train station still stands nearby.

🏫 A Small, Close-Knit Campus

With roughly 150 students and 15 teachers, Zhutian Elementary keeps a close-knit, small-town character well over a century after its founding.

At the heart of old Dunwu.

🏮

Zhutian Elementary sits at the historic center of the old Dunwu (頓物) rice-trading settlement, in Zhutian Township — the Liudui Hakka confederation's "Middle Pile" (中堆). The nearby 1919 Zhutian Station, the only surviving Japanese-style wooden train station in Pingtung, is now part of the Zhutian Station Cultural Park, and the school's own torii gate and "Taiwan-Japan Friendship" monument add a uniquely preserved layer of Taiwan-Japan historical memory to this Hakka farming community. See the Pingtung county page for more on the region.
