Yanping Elementary was founded on May 21, 1920, as a satellite classroom of Linpipu (Zhushan) Public School, the historic predecessor institution at the heart of the township's old walled town. The school's campus was destroyed in the devastating 1999 921 earthquake and was subsequently rebuilt through the Tzu Chi Foundation's "Hope Project" (希望工程), giving Yanping its distinctive grey, temple-like Tzu Chi architectural style that is now a familiar landmark in the school's mountain foothill setting.
延平國小創立於民國9年（1920年）5月21日，最初是林圮埔（竹山）公學校的分教場，源自竹山古城核心的歷史母校。學校校舍在民國88年（1999年）921大地震中嚴重受損，其後由慈濟基金會「希望工程」重建，形成延平國小如今灰色、廟宇式風格的慈濟建築特色，成為山麓校園中極具辨識度的地標。
