Born from Taiwan's nine-year education reform.
Yanhe Junior High was established on August 1, 1968, as part of the nationwide reform that extended compulsory education to nine years across Taiwan. Not long after opening, the school helped set up a branch campus in the nearby Sheliao area, near the historic Zinan Temple. That branch became independent in 1976 as Sheliao Junior High, making Yanhe the origin school for one of Zhushan Township's other junior highs.

The branch campus Yanhe once oversaw grew up near the historic Zinan Temple area, one of Zhushan's most storied local landmarks.
Part of Zhushan's postwar education growth.
Delayed a step from Zhushan's old town center, Yanhe Junior High grew out of the township's post-war education expansion and once oversaw the founding of the Sheliao branch school near the historic Zinan Temple area — a landmark shrine that anchors community life in that part of Zhushan. See the Nantou county page for more on the region.
