Built so Qigu's scattered villages could reach a middle school.
Zhuqiao Junior High began in August 1970 as a branch campus of Hougang Junior High, then known as "臺南縣後港國民中學竹橋分部." It was created because Qigu District's salt-field and oyster-farming villages were too scattered for students to commute to a single town-center school. The branch became a fully independent school in August 1972 under its first principal, Chen Qianqing, and remains today the only public junior high serving the entire district.

The campus shares its lineage with neighboring Zhuqiao Elementary, whose grounds hold a roughly 100-year-old banyan tree nicknamed "Grandpa Banyan," which students ceremonially climbed during the elementary school's 2022 centennial.
🧂 Built for Qigu's Salt and Oyster Villages
為七股鹽田蚵鄉而設
As the sole junior high for Qigu's salt-pan and lagoon hamlets, the school exists so students from these rural villages no longer have to travel to a neighboring township for middle school.
Rooted in Qigu's salt flats and lagoons.
Qigu District is shaped by two industries: salt production, once among Taiwan's largest salt-field regions, and oyster farming along its lagoons and tidal flats — the same wetlands that draw black-faced spoonbills and birdwatchers from around the world every winter. Zhuqiao Junior High exists because of this geography: it was created in 1970 specifically so children from Qigu's scattered salt-worker and oyster-farming villages would not have to commute to a neighboring township for middle school. See the Tainan city page for more on the region.
