A village school at the gateway to Yushan.
Zhuole Elementary was reportedly founded around August 1969 and now carries half a century of history in the Bunun settlement of Takluk, on the north bank of the Laonong (Lakulaku) River. It is one of the smallest schools in Zhuoxi Township, with roughly six classes and about 32 students, yet its location gives it an unusually striking backdrop: the entrance to Yushan National Park.

👨👩👧 A Half-Century, Small-School Story
近半世紀的迷你小學
With roughly 32 students across six classes, Zhuole represents the intimate scale typical of Zhuoxi's mountain schools, where every student is known by name.
Zhuoxi Township, a Bunun mountain home.
Zhuoxi Township is a remote, mountainous district of Hualien County bordering Yushan National Park, home to a majority Bunun Indigenous population. Its eight elementary schools — and no junior high — reflect villages small enough that most students continue their education elsewhere after sixth grade. See the Hualien schools page for the full township list.
