A small school built around Bunun identity.
Zhuofeng Elementary is a small rural school in Gufeng Village, deep in the mountainous Zhuoxi Township of Hualien County. Like most schools in this remote area, it serves a student body that is almost entirely Bunun Indigenous, and its school motto — to raise students who are grateful, confident, and competitive Bunun people — reflects a curriculum built around cultural transmission as much as academics.
What makes this school worth knowing.
🏹 Archery as a School Tradition
Students practice archery as part of school life, a skill rooted in Bunun hunting tradition and taught here as a living cultural practice rather than a museum piece.
🎶 Voices in Polyphony
The school teaches traditional Bunun polyphonic singing, an intricate vocal tradition passed down through generations of communal ceremony and song.
🏔️ A Mini School in the Mountains
Zhuofeng is one of several very small "mini schools" scattered across Zhuoxi's remote villages, where low enrollment means close relationships between teachers and students.
🙏 A Motto Rooted in Character
The school's guiding motto calls on students to become grateful, confident, and competitive members of the Bunun community — character formation alongside classroom learning.
Zhuoxi Township, a Bunun mountain home.
Zhuoxi Township is a remote, mountainous district of Hualien County near Yushan National Park, home to a majority Bunun Indigenous population. Its eight elementary schools — and no junior high — reflect villages small enough that most students continue their education elsewhere after sixth grade. See the Hualien schools page for the full township list.
