Datong Senior High School began as a junior high preparatory office in 2000 and formally opened in 2003. A senior high division was added in 2013, making it a 'complete middle school' (國中部+高中部) spanning grades 7 through 12. Built with an investment of roughly NT$200 million, the school sits in Zhunan's Dapu area, close to the Hsinchu Science Park's Zhunan campus, and has grown rapidly in both size and academic reputation as one of Miaoli's newer public high schools.
大同高中的前身為民國89年（2000年）成立的國中部籌備處，於民國92年（2003年）正式設校，並於民國102年（2013年）增設高中部，成為涵蓋國中部與高中部的完全中學。學校建校投資約新台幣兩億元，校址位於竹南鎮大埔里，鄰近新竹科學園區竹南基地，是苗栗縣近年規模與學術聲望成長最快的公立高中之一。
