Bamboo, a lake, and two lost villages.

Zhuhu Elementary was founded in 1947 on a 1.1-hectare campus that once held two Amis settlements, known as "Little Zhuhu" and "Saobie." The school's name, meaning "Bamboo Lake," comes from the dense bamboo groves that once encircled a lake-like basin in the area. With fewer than 30 students, it is one of the smallest schools on this stretch of coast — yet it received Ministry of Education funding to build a traditional Amis dwelling right on its campus, anchoring Indigenous heritage education in daily school life.

🎋 A Name Rooted in the Landscape

"Zhuhu" means "Bamboo Lake," named for the dense bamboo groves that once surrounded a lake-like basin here — a small but telling piece of local geography and memory.

🏘️ Built on the Site of Two Villages

🎍

Built on former Amis village land and now home to a reconstructed traditional Amis house, Zhuhu Elementary anchors Indigenous heritage education directly into its campus in this remote stretch of Changbin's coast, rather than treating it as a separate subject.
