The mother school of Zhudong.

Jhudong Elementary describes itself, on its own official website, as the first elementary school established in Zhudong — founded in 1897, during the early years of Japanese colonial rule, when the town was still known as Shuqilin (until a 1920 renaming). Over more than a century, several other Zhudong public elementary schools — including Zhongshan, Datong, Erzhong, and Shakeng — were spun off from Jhudong Elementary as branch schools before becoming independent, making it the direct educational root of the township's school system. The school today runs an "English and Hakka Garden" program that reflects the bilingual, multicultural character of the region.

🌲

As the "mother school" from which nearly every other Zhudong public elementary school descended, Jhudong Elementary is the direct educational legacy of the town's founding as the Hakka logging settlement of Shuqilin (樹杞林) — the name Zhudong carried until it was changed in 1920.
