Zhongtun Elementary was founded in April 1922 as a branch of Gangwei Public School, becoming an independent school in March 1946. It added a branch campus at Dacang Island in 1955, which itself became independent twenty years later, in 1975. The school relocated to its current site in 1969 and took its present name in 1968, during the nationwide switch to nine-year compulsory education.
中屯國小創立於民國11年（1922年）4月，最初為港尾公學校的分校，於民國35年（1946年）3月獨立設校。民國44年（1955年）增設大倉分校，該分校於20年後、民國64年（1975年）獨立設校。學校於民國58年（1969年）遷至現址，並於民國57年（1968年）九年國教實施之際定名為現名。
