Taiwan's pioneering girls' school.

Zhongshan Girls' Senior High School traces its origins to 1897, when it opened as a Japanese-era girls' vocational school in Shilin (士林女子學校) — teaching Japanese, artificial flower-making, weaving, and sewing, and standing as one of the earliest formal schools for girls in Taiwan.

After World War II it became "Taipei No. 2 Girls' Middle School," with December 8 — the date of the school's formal 1945 postwar handover — fixed as its anniversary. It took its present name, "Taipei Municipal Zhongshan Girls' Senior High School," in 1967, when Taipei was upgraded to a special municipality. Today, on Chang'an East Road in the heart of Zhongshan District, it remains one of Taipei's most competitive public girls' senior highs, with generations of alumnae prominent in Taiwanese politics, media, and academia.

A century of education in Zhongshan.

🏛️

Sitting on Chang'an East Road in the heart of Zhongshan District, the school's century-plus history as Taiwan's pioneering girls' school mirrors the district's own role as an early center of modern, Japanese-era urban development and education in Taipei — long before Zhongshan grew into the dense residential and commercial district it is today. See the Taipei county page for more on the region.
