The valley of camphor trees.
Zhongshan Senior High sits at the historic heart of Nanzih, a district whose name derives from the Qing-dynasty place name "楠仔坑" (Nanzihkeng, or "Camphor-Tree Gully") — so called because camphor trees once grew thickly along the local stream valleys. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
