Founded in a banana inspection station.
Yongkang Elementary began in September 1953 as a branch of Zhongliao Elementary School, with its first classes notably held in a local banana inspection station — a direct nod to Zhongliao's historic banana trade. The school became independent in 1955 and took its current name in 1968. Its Zhicheng Building was damaged in the 1999 921 earthquake and subsequently rebuilt in 2001, part of the township-wide wave of post-quake reconstruction.

From banana trade to honey and longan farming.
Its founding in a local banana inspection station reflects Zhongliao's historic role as a farming township — an economy that later became centered on longan orchards and honey production, especially after the 1999 earthquake reshaped the community. See the Nantou county page for more on the region.
