Zhonghe Elementary School was established on June 1, 1946, amid the postwar administrative reorganization of Taiwan, originally named "Tainan County Shuishang Township Fourth National School" before being reorganized as Zhonghe National School. On September 1, 1946, it established the Sanjiepu Branch, which became independent as Chenggong National School in 1952. On September 1, 1959, it established the Yixing Branch, which became independent as Yixing National School in 1963. The school adopted its current name, Zhonghe Elementary School, in 1968 under the nine-year compulsory education reform. Today the school runs a Chinese traditional music ensemble program known as "絲竹琴韻樂悠揚," a soccer team, English learning through "Cool English" speaking/listening competitions, and mother-tongue/native-language day celebrations.

分出成功與義興國小
Both Chenggong Elementary and Yixing Elementary trace their origins to branches established by Zhonghe Elementary, making it a formative institution for the area's school network.
A parent school for the Chilan River communities.
A "parent school" that spun off both Chenggong Elementary and Yixing Elementary as its catchment area's population grew, the school reflects the historically dispersed farming-village settlement pattern of southeastern Shuishang Township along the Chilan River (赤蘭溪). See the Chiayi County page for more on the region.
