Over a century beside the old river.
Zhaoming Elementary was founded in 1918, during the Japanese colonial era, as Chikan Public School It was renamed Zhaoming School after 1945 and took its current name, Zhaoming Elementary School, in 1968. With over a century of history, the school also operates a branch campus near Kaohsiung's Pingding Special District that preserves Japanese-era remnants and looks out over the old Xiashui River — the historical name for what is today the Gaoping River.

A view over a historic river.
The branch campus's view over the "下淡水溪" — the old name for today's Gaoping River — connects Zhaoming Elementary to the river system that shaped settlement patterns across southern Kaohsiung for centuries. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
