From girls' school to a citywide coed campus.
Chang'an Junior High School was founded in 1968 as "Chang'an Girls' Junior High School," part of the same era that produced several other girls'-only schools in Zhongshan District, echoing Zhongshan Girls' High's own history. The Ministry of Education designated it a key development school for gymnastics and handball in 1981-82, and it ran a beauty and hairdressing vocational program in 1988 — alongside a full renovation of the campus exterior with distinctive pink tile cladding, a look that stood out at the time.
The school became coeducational and adopted its present name in 1991, reflecting a broader citywide move away from single-sex public secondary education in the early 1990s. Its campus expanded in phases over roughly a decade, including the Ren'ai Building in 1976 and the Xinyi Building in 1979.
