Yuan Ze University was founded through an endowment from Yu-Ziang Hsu, founder of the Far Eastern Group, a major Taiwanese conglomerate. Planning began in the mid-1980s, and the school opened as Yuan Ze Institute of Technology, enrolling its first 134 undergraduates in July 1989 in programs including Electrical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering. It was named "Yuan Ze" (元智) after the given name of Hsu Yu-Ziang's father, honoring his commitment to education. The institute was upgraded and renamed Yuan Ze University effective August 1, 1997.
元智大學由遠東集團創辦人徐有庠先生捐資興學。1980年代中期開始籌設，初名「元智工學院」，1989年7月首屆招收134名大學部學生，設有電機工程、機械工程等系。「元智」二字取自徐有庠先生尊翁的名諱，以彰其興學之志。1997年8月1日改制升格為元智大學。
