Yushan Junior High School was approved by the Chiayi County Council in autumn 1959 as “Chiayi County Yushan Junior High School,” with its formal setup completed the following year. It became a national junior high in 1968 under the nine-year compulsory education policy, then changed to municipal affiliation in 1982 when Chiayi became a provincial city. Over the decades, Yushan has spawned two daughter schools — Minxiong Junior High in 1964 and Liujia Junior High in 1965.
玉山國中於民國48年(1959年)秋獲嘉義縣議會通過設立「嘉義縣立玉山初級中學」,隔年(1960年)完成正式建校。民國57年(1968年)九年國教實施後改為國立國中,71年(1982年)嘉義市升格省轄市後改隸市立。玉山國中並先後分設民雄國中(1964年)與六家國中(1965年)兩所分校。
