From a mining boomtown to a revitalized village school.
Yushan Elementary grew up around a once-thriving cement and limestone mining industry, at its peak enrolling over 300 students, most of them children of local miners. When the mine eventually closed, the school's enrollment collapsed and it faced a real risk of merger or closure. Rather than fade away, Yushan reinvented itself with programs in calligraphy, rhythmic music, science education, and table tennis, alongside a "long-term care" style approach to student support suited to its remote location.

🖌️ Calligraphy and Rhythmic Music
Calligraphy and rhythmic music programs give students at this small school a distinctive artistic identity, part of its post-mining revival strategy.
🏓 Table Tennis and Science
Table tennis training and science education round out the school's efforts to build new strengths after the decline of the local mining industry.
🤝 Long-Term Student Support
Given its remote location, the school has implemented a "long-term care" style of student support, providing steady continuity for children in this outlying community.
A mining town's second chapter.
Yushan's mining-town origin and subsequent revival illustrate the same demographic pressures facing many outlying Hakka hill villages around Guanxi.
