A mining-era school that closed with dignity, and a farewell song.
Yuemei Elementary was founded in 1964, and grew to nearly 1,000 students at its peak, driven by the local coal-mining industry that drew many mining families to the Xinyi District area. Over its 57 years, the school produced several notable alumni, including entertainer Bai Bingbing, writer and professor Lin Jianlong, and music producer Lin Chuili. As Keelung's coal era faded and the district's population declined — with three other elementary schools within just 1.1 km — enrollment steadily fell. The school closed permanently on August 1, 2021, with its final 33 students transferring to nearby Zhongxing Elementary. Before closing, the school produced a farewell video, "情牽月眉,展翼高飛" ("Bound to Yuemei, Wings Take Flight"), featuring testimonials from alumni. Its campus was later repurposed as a physical campus for a community college.

After closing, the campus was repurposed as a physical campus for a community college, keeping the site in continued educational use.
A working-class school in Keelung's coal country.
Like nearby Shangzhi Elementary, Yuemei's history is tied to Keelung's coal-mining community rather than the port and fishing culture found elsewhere in the city — reflecting another facet of Keelung's resource-industry heritage. See the Keelung county page for more on the region.
