Small school, big mountain views.
Yuanli Zhongshan Elementary School was established in 1961, having originated as a 1958 branch campus of Shanjiao Elementary School. Today it is a small school of about 12 classes, a reflection of the declining birthrate affecting many rural Miaoli communities. The school has built a distinctive identity around "flipped classroom" project-based learning, with students exploring the ecology of nearby Huoyan Mountain — a badlands landscape that has become both a teaching resource and a rite of passage, with climbing the mountain a cherished graduation tradition.
