Born from a campaign to shorten a long walk to school.
Lantian Elementary School became independent in 1951, growing out of a 1949 branch campus of Shanjiao Elementary School. The school owes its existence to a grassroots campaign: local village leaders and a county councilman lobbied for a school of their own so that children in the area would no longer need to walk one to two hours to reach Shanjiao Elementary. A kindergarten was added to the campus in 1995.
