About · 學校簡介

A century of history, told through five names.

Youchang Elementary traces its origins to 1918, when it opened as a branch of Jiucheng Public School serving the Youchong area, during the period of Japanese colonial rule. Over the following decades the school was renamed several times as Taiwan's governance changed: it became Zuoying No. 2 Public School in 1922, Kaohsiung Youchong National School in 1941, Kaohsiung Municipal No. 6 National School in 1945, Kaohsiung Nanzih District Youchang National School in 1947, and finally took its current name in 1968. With more than a century of history, it remains one of the larger elementary schools in Nanzih District.

🏘️ Left and Right, in Place Names

「右」與「左營」的對照

The school's name preserves the Qing-era place name "右沖庄" — the historic counterpart to nearby "Zuoying" (左營, "left camp"), a pairing rooted in Qing-dynasty military settlement naming.

Left and right, since the Qing dynasty.

🏯

"Youchang" (右昌) descends from the Qing-dynasty settlement name "右沖庄" — the geographic counterpart to "Zuoying" (左營, "left camp") in a naming convention from Qing-era military garrison towns. The name is shared with neighboring Youchang Junior High School, both rooted in the same historic settlement. See the Kaohsiung county page for more.
