A layered history behind a quieter name.
Yongfang Elementary carries a long and layered history dating back to 1898 (Meiji 31), when it began as a "national language institute" (國語傳習所) during the Japanese colonial era, becoming a formal branch school in 1908. Over the following decades it was renamed and relocated several times — from Shanzaiding Branch School (1908) to Wenggongyuan Branch School (1915), independent Wenggongyuan Public School (1918), Daliao Public School (1921), and Daliao National School (1941) — before finally taking its current name, Yongfang National School, in 1947, matching its location in Yongfang Village. Though it no longer carries the "Daliao" name, Yongfang Elementary is, in fact, the institutional heir to 大寮公學校 — Daliao's very first school — a lineage distinct from the newer Daliao Elementary School, which was founded independently in 1965.

🏆 The True First School of Daliao
大寮真正的第一所學校
Yongfang Elementary is the institutional descendant of 大寮公學校, Daliao's original Japanese-era public school — a lineage distinct from the newer, unrelated-in-origin Daliao Elementary School founded in 1965.
🏘️ Named for Its Village, Not the District
以聚落而非行政區命名
The school took its current name in 1947 to match its location in Yongfang Village, even as it kept carrying forward the historical lineage of the "Daliao" name.
🌸 A Coincidental Echo in Naming
巧合的命名迴響
The school's 1915 branch name, "Wenggongyuan," phonetically echoes the separate Wengyuan Elementary School (翁園國小) located elsewhere in the district — a coincidental shared root, not a shared institution.
The district's oldest lineage, quietly carried.
Yongfang Elementary's layered lineage — running from an 1898 language institute all the way through 大寮公學校, Daliao's original public school — makes it, historically speaking, the school with the district's oldest continuous educational lineage, even though its name today points to Yongfang Village rather than Daliao itself. See the Kaohsiung county page for more on the region.
