Secondary education carved into the mountains.
Datong Junior High traces its origins to 1962, when it began as a borrowed-classroom branch class of Sanxing Junior High in the remote settlement of Tuchang — a reflection of how difficult it was to reach secondary education from Datong's scattered mountain villages. The school became independent in 1969, alongside Taiwan's move to nine-year compulsory education, and its campus was relocated twice more, eventually settling on its present site on "Duli Mountain" (獨立山) after a flood destroyed an earlier building site. Today it remains the only junior high school serving Datong Township, and offers Atayal Indigenous language courses as part of its curriculum.

The school relocated twice in its early years, including after a flood destroyed the foundation of a planned campus — a story that mirrors the challenges of building schools in Datong's steep, river-cut terrain.
📖 A Branch Class in the Mountains
土場分班起家
Before it had its own campus, Datong Junior High began life as a borrowed-classroom branch of Sanxing Junior High in the remote settlement of Tuchang, showing how far secondary education once had to travel to reach these villages.
🗣️ Atayal Language in the Classroom
泰雅族語課程
The school offers Atayal Indigenous language courses and cultural curriculum, supporting students in maintaining their mother tongue alongside their regular studies.
🏔️ The Only Junior High in Datong
大同鄉唯一國中
As the township's sole junior high, the school draws students from villages scattered across Datong's mountainous terrain, making it a genuine community anchor point.
Serving an Atayal mountain community.
Datong Township is a mountainous, entirely Atayal Indigenous community, and Datong Junior High serves as the anchor for secondary education across its dispersed villages — a role shaped by the area's historic remoteness and difficult terrain. See the Yilan county page for more on the region.
