A school named for a fallen airman.

Yili Elementary School was founded in September 1949 as the "Donggang Air Force Dependents' School" (東港空軍子弟學校), built on the site of a former Japanese military officers' club. In August 1966 it was transferred to Pingtung County government control and took its current name, "Yili," in memory of Republic of China Air Force officer Zhou Yili, who died in the line of duty on a mission over mainland China on June 20, 1963. A bronze statue of Zhou Yili, sculpted by Lin Muchuan, was installed on campus in 1987, honoring his memory to this day.

Donggang Town's fishing-port and military-aviation history intersect at Yili Elementary — the town is renowned for its bluefin tuna auctions and the triennial King Boat Burning Festival, while this school's own origins as an Air Force dependents' school reflect another layer of the town's 20th-century story. See the Pingtung county page for more on the region.
