Taiwan's last all-girls elementary school.
Yilan Elementary School opened on April 1, 1918, as "Yilan Girls' Public School" (宜蘭女子公學校) — the city's first public school enrolling only female students. It went through several name changes under Japanese rule, becoming Taihoku Prefecture Yilan District Girls' Public School in 1920, Taihoku Prefecture Yilan City Girls' Public School in 1940, and Taihoku Prefecture Yilan City Xiangyang National School in 1941. The school gradually began admitting boys starting August 1, 1996, ending a 78-year run as an all-girls institution and becoming coeducational — reportedly the last all-girls elementary school in Taiwan to do so. Its compact 1.5-hectare campus also houses county family education and teacher training centers.
