Orchid Island's oldest school, on an international stage.
Yeyou Elementary began in 1947 as a branch of Lanyu National School and became fully independent in August 1963, making it one of Orchid Island's oldest schools. In August 2020 it became the first school on the island to convert to Indigenous experimental education. Since 2006 its campus has also hosted the Lanyu branch of Taitung County's Indigenous Tribal College, extending its role in community education well beyond its own students. The school is best known, however, for founding the "Little Flying Fish Cultural Performance Group" in 2006 — a student troupe that has won national awards and performed internationally, including in New Zealand in 2015 and Poland in 2019, and whose story helped inspire the 2018 Taiwanese film "Only the Sea Knows."
