A century-old name in a brand-new building.
Yanping Elementary was founded on April 1, 1939, during the Japanese colonial era, as Kawai (河合) Public School, named for the nearby Kawai-chō district. Students initially boarded at Yuanshan National School before the dedicated campus site — between the old Taiping-chō and Dalongdong-chō areas — was requisitioned in 1940, and the school moved there in 1941, becoming "河合國民學校." It was renamed "延平國民學校" after WWII, then "延平國民小學" in 1968 under the nine-year compulsory education reform. The school underwent a full campus demolition and rebuild starting in 2017, with students relocated temporarily to a satellite campus at Lanzhou Junior High during construction; the new four-story-above, two-story-below building, including a city-operated underground parking structure, was completed in 2021.

Between two historic neighborhoods.
Yanping Elementary sits between the historic Taiping-chō and Dalongdong neighborhoods, two of the core sub-areas that define old Datong District. Its very campus site was carved out of the boundary between these two communities during the Japanese colonial era, making the school a literal meeting point of Datong's historic geography.
