A century of names, in the heart of old Yancheng.
Yancheng Elementary School dates to 1921, when it opened under Japanese rule as Kaohsiung Second Ordinary Higher Elementary School. It was renamed Horiie Ordinary Higher Elementary School in 1937, after the Japanese-settler quarter of Horiie-chō where it stood, then became Yancheng National School in 1947 and took its current name in 1968. Its main brick school building, completed in 1926, still anchors the historic campus. Notable alumni include Peng Ming-min, the prominent Taiwanese human-rights advocate and politician. A 2021 retrospective article, "The Forgotten Century of 'Kaohsiung's Second Elementary,'" revisited the school's long, layered history.
