Borrowed classrooms, then a home of its own.
Xiyuan Elementary School was founded on August 1, 1959, in the Jiala area of southern Wanhua near Dongyuan Street. Before it had a campus of its own, the school initially borrowed classrooms from neighboring Dongyuan Elementary School. The new campus at its current site was completed in 1961, opening with 13 classes. Since then Xiyuan has grown into an established neighborhood elementary school within Wanhua's historic riverside farmland-turned-residential district.

Farmland turned neighborhood, south of old Bangka.
Xiyuan Elementary sits in the Jiala/Xiyuan area near Dongyuan Street, part of Wanhua's historic riverside farmland that gradually became a residential district. Like the rest of Jiala, this area has always looked north to Bangka (艋舺)'s historic core, where Longshan Temple (龍山寺) and the traditional apothecaries of Herb Lane (青草巷) remain the district's spiritual and commercial anchors.
