One of Penghu's oldest junior highs.

Xiyu Junior High opened in April 1946 as Penghu County Xiyu Junior High School, making it one of the county's oldest junior high schools. In 1949 it was absorbed into the Taiwan Provincial Magong Middle School system, before being re-established as an independent school in 1968 under Taiwan's new nine-year compulsory education system. Today it remains a small school, with roughly 68 students and 13 teachers in recent years, serving Chidong Village and the surrounding communities on Xiyu — home of Penghu's famous basalt columns.

Xiyu Township — historically known as Yuweng Island (漁翁島) — is Penghu's western peninsula, a landscape of dramatic basalt columns, old lighthouses, and traditional Minnan fishing villages. Students at Xiyu Junior High grow up among communities that have fished these waters for generations. See the Penghu county page for more on the region.
