An experimental school built around nature.
Xishan Experimental Elementary School began in 1956 as a branch campus of Pingdeng Elementary School's Xishan branch, becoming an independent school as "Xishan Elementary School" in 1962. In 2019, it was converted to its current "experimental elementary school" (實驗小學) status. Set in a remote mountain location off Zhishan Road Section 3, close to Yangmingshan's forested interior, the school is famous as a filming location for the classic Taiwanese film "Dew of the Mountain" (魯冰花). It operates on a distinctive "four seasons" (春夏秋冬四學季) academic calendar rather than a standard two-semester system, with no formal exams, as part of its emphasis on nature-based, life-connected learning.

🧪 A Designated Experimental School
Converted to "experimental elementary school" status in 2019, Xishan follows a distinctive pedagogical approach built entirely around its remote natural setting.
Built entirely around the mountain.
As a designated "experimental" school built entirely around its remote mountain setting and connection to nature, Xishan directly embodies the Yangmingshan foothill and forest geography of Shilin's rural interior, far from the district's urban core. See the Taipei county page for more on the region.
