The school every Kaohsiung native calls "雄中."

Kaohsiung Senior High School opened on April 1, 1922, making it the oldest secondary school in the Kaohsiung-Pingtung region. The campus was originally planned for Pingtung, but a fire diverted the project to Kaohsiung's 三塊厝 hamlet instead — the same hamlet whose pre-1945 name later gave Sanmin District its own. The school preserves its 1921 "Red Building" (紅樓), a listed historic building, and counts Judicial Yuan president Dai Yen-hui, political figure Peng Ming-min, former Kaohsiung mayor Hsu Shui-teh, and current mayor Chen Chi-mai among its alumni. Almost everyone in Taiwan knows the school by its nickname, "Xiongzhong" (雄中).
