Rebuilt after the storm.
Xinyuan Elementary began in 1950 as a small branch school, housed in a single thatched-roof building. It became an independent school on August 1, 1956. Disaster struck when Typhoon Dena destroyed the original classrooms, forcing the school to relocate and rebuild entirely at its present site — a rebuilding that shaped the campus Xinyuan's students know today.
新園國小於民國39年(1950年)以茅草屋教室的分班型態創立,民國45年(1956年)8月1日正式獨立設校。後因黛娜颱風重創原有校舍,學校被迫遷址並在現址全面重建,也造就了今日的校園樣貌。
What makes this school worth knowing.
🌾 A Thatched-Roof Beginning
茅草屋教室起家
Xinyuan Elementary's earliest classrooms, in 1950, were housed in a single thatched-roof building — a humble start typical of many rural Taitung schools of the era.
🌀 Rebuilt After Typhoon Dena
黛娜颱風後重建校舍
Typhoon Dena destroyed the school's original classrooms, forcing a full relocation and rebuild at its present site — a resilience story shared by many of Taitung's coastal schools.
🏫 Independent Since 1956
1956年正式獨立設校
After six years as a small branch school, Xinyuan became fully independent on August 1, 1956, a milestone still marked in the school's history today.
Part of Taitung City's school network.
Xinyuan Elementary serves the Xinyuan neighborhood of Taitung City, on Taiwan's southeast coast — a region regularly shaped by Pacific typhoons, as the school's own rebuilding history shows. See the Taitung county page for more on the region.
