Xinyi Junior High was founded in August 1961 as "Keelung Municipal 3rd Junior Middle School." In August 1968, when nine-year compulsory education was implemented nationwide across Taiwan, the school was renamed Keelung Municipal Xinyi Junior High School, and simultaneously designated an experimental junior high school — among the first cohort of schools nationwide to carry that designation.
信義國中創校於1961年（民國50年）8月，前身為「基隆市立第三初級中學」。1968年（民國57年）8月，隨著全國實施九年國民義務教育，學校改名為「基隆市立信義國民中學」，同時獲指定為實驗國民中學，是全國最早一批獲此指定的學校之一。
