From a military-village school to a rebuilt campus.

Xinhe Elementary School opened in September 1959 with its first cohort of 443 first-graders across seven classes, most of them children from military-dependents'-village (眷村) families in the area. With its own buildings still under construction, those early classes were borrowed from nearby Yingqiao and Dongyuan elementary schools. Enrollment grew rapidly, peaking at 3,865 students across 68 classes in 1971 — the highest in the school's history. The campus was rebuilt from 2017 to 2023, receiving its occupancy permit in September 2023, and today serves a much smaller but modern student body on Xizang Road.

What makes this school worth knowing.

🏘️ Roots in the Military-Dependents' Villages

The school's first cohort in 1959 was made up mostly of children from nearby military-dependents' villages, reflecting a distinct chapter of postwar Taipei's social history.

📈 A Peak of Nearly 4,000 Students

Enrollment peaked in 1971 at 3,865 students across 68 classes — the highest in the school's history, and a striking measure of the postwar baby boom in Wanhua.

🏗️ A Fully Rebuilt Campus

A complete campus rebuild ran from 2017 to 2023, with the occupancy permit obtained in September 2023, giving Xinhe one of the newer school buildings in the district today.

On the old drainage line into old Bangka.

🌊

Xinhe Elementary sits on Xizang Road near where the old "No. 3 Special Drainage Ditch" (特三號排水溝) once ran, part of Wanhua's flood-prone riverside geography. That same low-lying terrain shaped the growth of Bangka (艋舺), also known as Monga, whose historic core — anchored by Longshan Temple (龍山寺) and the traditional shops of Herb Lane (青草巷) — sits just to the north, tying this newer campus back to the district's much older riverside story.
