A century of history before Xinyi had a name.
Xingya Elementary School was founded in 1915, during the Japanese colonial era, as a branch classroom of a Taipei city elementary school known as "Xikou Branch Classroom." It became an independent school, "Xikou Common and Higher Elementary School," in 1916, and relocated to its current Keelung Road site in 1941, when it was renamed "Taipei Futaba National School." After Taiwan's retrocession to the Republic of China, it was renamed "Taipei Songshan District Xingya National School" in February 1946. With roots dating to 1915, it is the oldest public school of any level in present-day Xinyi District, having marked its "century of history" (百年校史) milestone. The school predates Xinyi District itself, having been administratively under Songshan District until Xinyi District was carved out in March 1990.

A thread from a rural village to a skyline.
As Xinyi District's oldest school — predating even the Japanese colonial-era name "Xikou," the old name for the Songshan area — Xingya Elementary is a direct thread connecting today's high-rise financial district around Taipei 101 back to the rural Qing- and Japanese-era village that occupied the same ground more than a century ago. See the Taipei city page for more on the region.
