Xindong Junior High was founded in August 1968 under nine-year compulsory education, with Su Wan-neng as first principal. The campus site was formerly occupied by a pharmaceutical company. Named for its location east of central Xinying ('新東' means 'New East'), the school established one of the area's early gifted-education experimental classes in February 1980, and its current campus buildings were completed in November 2013.
新東國中創立於民國57年（1968年）8月，九年國教實施之際設校，首任校長為蘇萬能。校地原為一家藥廠（藥仔會社）用地。校名「新東」取自其位於新營市區以東的位置，學校於民國69年（1980年）2月設立區內早期的智賦優異實驗班之一，現有校舍則於民國102年（2013年）11月完工。
