A castle rebuilt after disaster.
Hsincheng Elementary was founded in 1918 during the Japanese colonial era. Its castle-like, red-tile-roofed architecture near a historic black-sugar production area earned it the nickname "the castle amid sugar fragrance" (糖香中的城堡). The school suffered severe damage in the catastrophic June 25, 1961 Lianyi Gunpowder Factory explosion, and its campus was eventually rebuilt in 2013. Today it is the smallest of Baoshan Township's three elementary schools, with only about 60 students.
